Q: What’s your story?

I’ve always been fascinated by love. I’m drawn to reading about it, watching movies about it, talking to people about it. I want to know everything there is to know about how love works.

This project is an investigation. It’s my journey to discover and understand what love is, what it can be, what it can do. Toni Morrison said, “If there’s a book you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” When I hit a roadblock in my relationship I want a community and resource to turn to for advice, inspiration, humor, and openness. I haven’t found one that works for me, so that’s what I’m trying to create. A kind of oral tradition of love.

So, the project is personal. I want to talk to people who have successful partnerships because I want what they have and I want to know how they did it. If I look at a happy couple there could be genetic or other circumstantial factors that come into play – but I can’t control those – so I want to know what they’re doing to make themselves happy. I think if I talk to enough people from different walks of life I can discover what they share that make their love work; everyday things that I can learn from.

Q: What makes you the person for the job?

I’m a storyteller and a listener. I want to deeply and fully understand what people think and feel. Taking on someone else’s point of view comes naturally to me. I don’t scare easy and I don’t think I’ve ever been scandalized in my life. I try to make people feel safe so they can be their best, most fully-realized, perfectly imperfect selves.
